SEWA Home for Retired Caregivers

Self Employed Womens Association (SEWA) at Kochi has been doing yeoman services to the population of Kochi over the last two decades in attending to the aged, unwell, young mothers, differently abled - through their 3000 plus strong team of trained home nurses and care-givers.

A good number of women who are part of SEWA’s team are single women - spinsters, widows - who do not have any support system to take care of them when they need care.  SEWA’s management team, realising this extremely import aspect of women empowerment, has taken the pioneering step towards this by building a care home for their retired home nurses.

With part contribution from the home nurses themselves and part from SEWA’s reserve funds, they have invested in a quiet neighbourhood about 50 km off Kochi city.

The Master Plan envisions comfortable accommodation for upto 50 women along with spaces for small livelihood opportunities such as tailoring, home cooking, poultry, farming etc within their land.  A part of the land has been set aside to build a Care Home for the affordable section of population, income from which can help partly subsidise the retired nurses facility.
