#40 Panchavati

A 1600 sq.ft residence which challenged many a ‘conventional’ thinking about layout, forms and materiality of house designs way back in 1987.

Inspired by the works and philosophy of Ar Laurie Baker, #40, Panchavati is a compact 3BHK residence with a play of free flowing forms, crafted and quaint details.  The circular dining area is the focus of the layout with all other spaces laid radially around it.  With its triple floor height, the winding staircase, niches and openings, it almost has a ‘castle like’ charm – yet is very functional to provide the top ventilation / stack effect – so important for thermal comfort in hot humid Kochi climate.

Exposed brickwork, filler slab roofs, polished black and red floors and walls which explored the traditional coconut shell, lime, jaggery combination - flowing from floor to walls, rich handcrafted wood for interiors – all brought in a new language of contemporary crafted ambience for small, medium and big houses – which has since continued to be a distinct identity for Inspiration.
