Stone Hedge, Leh
Ensconced in the rugged Ladakh Range of the Himalayas, Stone Hedge - Nubra Valley is the first high altitude, all-weather resort in this part of the Himalayas.
Created with the vision of promoting all weather tourism and responsible architecture in the sequestered Nubra Valley, the design idea was to emphasize on bio-climatic design and to incorporate local materials, artisanal skills and processes to create sensitively designed spaces and nature based solutions for heating, insulation, water management, lighting and other infrastructure; besides capturing the dramatic landscape and beauty of the Himalayas.
Materials used are cement stabilized mud blocks using soil from the site; roof slab with combination of local woods – willow and poplar and mud; all doors/ windows with local timber; myriad hues of stone and pebbles for the walls and cladding in toilets; traditional handlooms for interiors with optimum use of glass and concrete.
