Mithradham, Aluva

Renewable Energy Centre, Mithradham, (www.mithradham.org) is the first fully renewable energy powered educational institution in India dedicated solely for the promotion of environment and renewable energy. The centre was established in 1996 under the Sacred Heart ( S.H.) Province, Kochi.

At a time when the whole sector of Renewable Energy was just taking baby steps in the country, Mithradham boldly took the initiative to be totally self-sufficient in its energy needs through renewable energy sources including solar, wind and biogas.

Initiated by Rev Dr George Peter Pittappillil, Mithradham gave Inspiration the opportunity to design a Campus which trod lightly on its terrain, which aspired to be Net Zero from as early as 1996.

Following the contours of the land, the building and its central courtyard flow freely in different levels.  Respectfully using crafted brick masonry walls with RCC filler slab for roof and stone masonry for foundations, every space in Mithradham is designed for natural lighting, ventilation and comfort without resorting to mechanical systems. Brick jallis provide filtered light and ventilation for stairs/ circulation spaces.

The entire campus showcases eco-practices including rain water harvesting, decentralised waste water treatment, decentralised solid waste management, organic agriculture, solar cooking and drying to name a few. Totally disconnected from the grid supply, all gadgets and equipment in Mithradham run on DC power to miimise energy loss.
